Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
The 2022 Outback Wilderness is built around the time- and trail-tested capability of standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which features a balanced design to create uniform stability and deliver an optimal distribution of power for maximum traction in virtually any weather or road condition - or even when there's no road at all. It delivers better handling, improved efficiency, and a quicker response to road conditions than competitors' optional systems.

9.5 Inches of Ground Clearance with Front Skid Plate, Improved Angles, and Enhanced X-MODE
With an elevated ground clearance of 9.5 inches and a standard front skid plate, you can take the Outback Wilderness into rougher terrain. The front and rear bumpers have been redesigned for improved approach and departure angles, so you can easily clear larger obstacles. The dual-function X-MODE has also been upgraded and re-tuned, with settings for deep snow, sand, and mud that allow additional wheel slip to power through adverse conditions.
New Off-Road Wheels with All-Terrain Tires and Full-Size Spare
Standard new 17-inch matte-black alloy off-road wheels and all-terrain Yokohama GEOLANDAR® tires provide improved performance in even the toughest trail conditions. A full-size spare is hidden below the cargo area for extra peace of mind when you're out on the trail.
Standard Direct-Injection Turbocharged SUBARU BOXER Engine and Re-tuned Gearing
Outback Wilderness features a standard 260-horsepower direct-injection turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine that delivers 277 pound-feet of torque and 3,500 pounds of towing capacity. The drivetrain features re-tuned gearing with revised front and rear gear ratios for improved low-speed climbing - up to a 40-percent grade.
Textured StarTex® Upholstery and Fold-Down Rear Seating
The Outback Wilderness isn't just rugged on the outside. The cabin is protected with durable StarTex® water-repellent upholstery featuring a textured honeycomb design. In back, the rear seats fold down to give you the flexibility to accommodate even more cargo and feature protective seat-back material to stand up to wear and tear from passengers, pets, and gear.
Redesigned Roof Rails
The redesigned roof rails are set off with Anodized Copper-finish accents and are able to support the weight of a rooftop tent, so you can quickly turn the Outback Wilderness into your comfortable expedition basecamp.

Re-Tuned Standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
The 2022 Outback Wilderness features standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you when you're swaying outside your lane[4]. The Automatic Pre-Collision Braking feature can apply full braking force and bring you to a complete stop in emergency situations. EyeSight and other safety features in the Outback Wilderness have been calibrated to match its increased ground clearance and extensive off-road upgrades.
Until the End of the Trail and Beyond
You and your Outback Wilderness are going to have a lot of adventures together. Of all the Outback vehicles sold in the past 10 years, 97% are still on the road today[5] - more than Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road or Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. That impressive reliability is one reason why Subaru vehicles hold their value better than any other brand, according to ALG[6]
Equipment You Can Count On
When you're heading out for the backcountry, you need gear you can trust, and the Outback Wilderness might just be your most important piece of equipment. Subaru knows something about trust as Kelley Blue Book's Most Trusted Brand for seven years running[7] as well as being a four-time Best Overall Brand winner[8] .
